Lewisham Business Awards launched!
Thursday, 26 November 2009

Lewisham Mayor Sir Steve Bullock
By Keely Sherbird
AMBITIOUS entrepreneurs rubbed shoulders at the launch of the Lewisham Mayor’s Business Awards.
A speed networking session was one of the highlights of the evening at the civic suite in Catford last Wednesday.
Nominations are now invited from businesses across the borough until the closing date of January 25, 2010.
Many of the nominees will feature in this paper as The Mercury is again the media partner for the awards.
They could also win £5,000, which is the prize for the overall company of the year, as well as widespread recognition for their achievements in areas such as creativity, innovation, customer service and social enterprise.
Lewisham Mayor Sir Steve Bullock said: “Local businesses make a huge contribution to the borough.
"They drive its economy and represent the fantastic diversity of the area.
“These Business Awards will be recognising and celebrating that contribution, particularly in light of the difficult economic conditions they’ve had to endure over the last year or so.”
The mayor was pleased the council was supporting the Best Pub category, adding: “I presume I will have to visit all of the entries personally!”
Ed James of Plan London won the Business Awards in 2005 after starting the company in his dining room the previous year.
He said: “Since then we have done so many different things but the awards have helped us plan what we are doing and they also gave us a lot of exposure.
"It’s good to get the recognition of the awards to say that you have got something good, then build on it and progress. It’s a brilliant event.”
Mr James said there was no better feeling than running your own business, because although you have to put in long hours, you leave with a smile on your face.
A glitzy awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at Blackheath Concert Halls, Blackheath.
The award itself will once again be made by Ndidi Ekubia who specialises in beautiful designs made out of metal.

The nomination form can be filled in online or can be picked up in libraries and other public venues.
The awards are open to all businesses in Lewisham.
Businesses themselves choose which category they would like to enter from the 10 different ones on offer.
